About the event
This series of workshops at Artistree (Pomfret, VT), led by Hettie Stearns, offers a compassionate space to explore grief through conversation and creative expression. Together we’ll gently engage with three different artistic approaches in a peer support style group. In our time together, we will utilize a method of collage art, a "stone flow" drawing technique, and create hand-sewn fabric talismans (a soft object to hold grief, memory, or transition). Each activity is beginner friendly. All materials will be provided!
October 29th - Somatic Collage
In our first class we will explore a slightly different approach to traditional collage art. In our time together, we will let our bodies crush and rip paper that we will reassemble without letting our minds get in the way of what we are making. This practice usually surprises people and gives us a great baseline in sharing our stories with each other while we create.
Novemeber 5th - Stone Flow Drawing
In our second class we will explore stone flow, sometimes called Pebble Drawing or "pushing rocks around". This a meditative practice of choosing a stone or crystal (provided) that represents our grief and letting it dictate a drawing for us. Our conversations with each other will be a continuation of the week prior, checking in on how our grief feels this week.
November 12th - Fabric Talismans
In our third class together we will create a small, hand-stitched fabric talisman -- a soft object to hold grief, memory, or transition. All materials will be thoughtfully provided, but participants are encouraged to bring anything personal they might want to work into their talisman (bits of cloth, fabric, a button, coin, thread, etc.). No sewing experience necessary! Just like in the weeks prior, we will be in conversation with each other, wrapping up our final thoughts as we close our group.
These creative tools offer reflection, connection, and ways of processing the complicated emotions that come with grief.
All types and timelines of grief are welcome.
