About the event
A silent supper is a shared meal eaten in silence to commune with our departed loved ones and ancestors. It is traditionally held on Samhain (Halloween) when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. An empty chair and place setting is reserved at the table to welcome our departed, and the meal is eaten in reverse order (desserts, then entrees, then appetizers) to mark this non-ordinary time.
The meal is potluck, and you are encouraged to bring an appetizer, entree or dessert that was a favorite food of your loved one, is a current family favorite, or that honors your ancestors. You may also want to wear a piece of clothing or an accessory that belonged to your loved one.
Young people who are able and willing to participate in the silence of the meal are welcomed.
At the end of the meal, we will break the silence to share stories and memories of our departed ones.
